Post by Alfan »

Merry Christmas :)

It has been a while since I made updates on my Q4... That is because not a lot has been done, lately.

In November I had a problem with the right, rear strut, where the top mounting had rusted through and was getting separated from the body :? This was fixed with a used part and the car got back on the road. But as I had found some rust at the rear end it was planned to go in the body shop to have this fixed. That is where it is now, I hope it will be done next week, so that I can assemble it again and use it for the rest of the winter.

You can see photos of some of the problems in the folder 'Rear rust' in my photo album. It turns out that when I had the car repainted 5 years ago, they didn't do a good job around the wheel arches - I am not really surprised about that...

It is going for the yearly inspection at the end of March and I know that I have to replace the windshield for it to pass. I am hoping that I will have my new car at that point, so the Q4 can get some more TLC at that point :)

So today was the day for the yearly inspection of the Q4 - and it passed without any comments!!

They didn't comment the crack in the windscreen and the rust work done (though not 100% done) was commented as being good. So no worries about that for the next year :D

At the next oil change I will replace the oil cooler. I also need to figure out why the radiator fan is coming on at random (still works at the correct temperatures). I am suspecting a ground signal being the problem...

It happens with ignition on only and with the engine running and is not changing whether aircon is on or off.

I have now updated the list of things done and to be done. If all goes to plan, it should get some more TLC soon, as it will not be the daily driver anymore....

When I came home Monday, the servo pump started groaning, as I turned off the motorway. Level was low and there were quite some fluid at the back of the Q4. It turns out that it was leaking somewhere at the transmission.

I got a rental car, as I don't want to wreck the pump, if the fluid drains completely. I topped up with fluid and the level did not drop, so today I drove it to the garage where the Lancia is normally parked (it is being repainted at the moment) and got under the Q4 to find that there is a hose of app. 30cm length with 3 'banjo' bolts on top of the differential (see photo and eper no. 2) and it seems to be the cause of the leak. I looked at the used diff to see how it is fitted and unfortunately, I don't think there is any possible way to replace it with the diff on the car... :(

So this means that some major work will have to be done and that will not happen right now. If anyone has taken dismantled the diff on a Q4, I would very much like to hear about what to be aware of.

Right now, I just hope that my new toy will appear very soon - it should have been here last month....!

Could be, as the leakage was not extreme (have experienced how fast it can empty when one of the pipes burst). But the level had dropped quite a lot in the reservoir, which it didn't do today on the 60km drive... I will have to read about the 4WD system again.

I drive more than 100km every work day and 40km is crossing water (above and below), so I don't want to add to the trouble...

I just thinking, I don't know. Its not pressure line that's for sure. The T-pice is just a soft vackum hose. But if the oil comes out there something can be wrong inside your diff that makes a overpressure. If you have blocked return line ect.

I think the reason that the hose on the diff has started leaking, is because petrol has run out of the fuel tank due to one of the rubber rings not sealing. I guess hydraulic fluids are ok, just not petrol...

Anyway, hope to get that fixed together with other stuff on the list, but rigth now it is getting a break from regular service, due to the newcomer... 8)

I have enjoyed the summer driving (and still do!), but hope to give the 164 some attention soon.

Main things to get done are:

Replacing oil cooler
Get a new hose for the 4WD
Fix suspension at the front, probably lower strut bearing on right side

Then I will see about all the other stuff that should be done. I also need to put the Lancia together after a repaint...

It is a shared garage and it is a very nice place to be :)

The only downside is, that it is placed 55km from where I live and in the opposite direction of work...

Now I got to the point of actually working on my Q4 :)

I replaced the oil cooler, got a new hose for the 4WD to put in and started dismantling the strut. The left strut has not been possible to disassemble, the top nut is following the piston, so some work to be done still.

This is all updated in my first posting in this thread. More to come!

The workshop managed to disassemble the left strut, however for some reason the rod in both were very difficult to extract again! They managed to put it all together and they are now mounted to the car again, as well as new mid and rear section exhaust.

Unfortunately, it started snowing this weekend, so my plan of going to the garage and test drive the Q4 has stopped... no winter tires on the 4C!

Oh, also replaced one of the 40A fuses in the engine bay, so the HVAC is running again.

I have now been driving about 5.000km since end of November and there are no leaks from the car! :D Oil stays in, the 4WD has not leaked (did not do anything about that), and petrol is only going through the engine, so all good on that part.

When winter is over (haven't really been here at all, up north), the 4C comes back on the road and the Q4 will get some more attention. I want to replace the ABS pump and 4WD fluid distribution unit from the parts car, I just picked up and then the shock absorbers need to be reconditioned and new springs put in.

You are right, that hose is only for venting the system. I got another one made, but it hasn't leaked since, so at least I have an extra ;)

I got the Q4 through the yearly inspection with the only comment being the cracked windshield, which needs to be replaced before next year's inspection. I hope to be able to use the one from the spare Q4.

Now it has been parked and the 4C is back on duty 8)

If it's cracked, isn't it covered by your insurance? or maybe new windscreens aren't produced anymore?
